Cairns Therapy and Nutrition was developed as a response to the lack of services for those who have experienced and live with trauma and/or struggle with food, weight, and body concerns. The founders, Psychologist Dr. Sarah Cairns and CNS, Personal Trainer Sean Cairns have brought together their knowledge to fill a need. Whilst Dr. Sarah was still in graduate school and Sean was still working in gyms; the overlapping nature of trauma and its physical, emotional, and mental manifestations, which was “treated” by weight loss became glaringly obvious.

Cairns Therapy and Nutrition looks at trauma as a cause of food and body issues, seeking to first address the underlying problems related to trauma whilst also addressing the journey individuals are having with their body and their relationship with food. A process which addresses the mental, emotional, and physical impacts of these problems; knowing that one cannot be fully resolved without the others.

Though our providers are blessed to have a unique knowledge base related to food, weight, and body concerns, trauma can wreak havoc on lives in other ways. Our providers are also skilled in working with other presentations: of trauma:  PTSD, panic attacks, dissociation, disturbing memories, phobias, addiction, interpersonal and family of origins issues, and overall stress.

The Vision

Dr. Sarah and Sean set out to create a practice that views the journey of a healing from a holistic approach; incorporating mental, physical, and emotional components supported from the appropriate representative professionals. They created a space where healing is viewed as coming from resolution and processing of past events, addressing the present concerns, and creating lasting change for the future.

Affordable Care

One of the biggest barriers to quality and appropriate care is financial. Cairns Therapy and Nutrition holds as a foundational tenant the importance of providing services to those in need and providing services to their community. As such, each provider accepts a portion of their client load at a reduced fee based. In order to further decrease this substantial barrier to care, interns will be taking clients whilst receiving in house supervision and continuing training related to EMDR, trauma, and food, weight, and body concerns.
